NFT market continues to decline

NFT Market Slumps for Second Week in a Row, Ethereum Retains Dominance While Polygon Surges

June 24th 12:07

The Non-Fungible Token (NFT) market, a significant player in the cryptocurrency world, continued its downward trend last week. Total sales dropped 12% to just below $100 million, a substantial decrease, according to CryptoSlam data. This follows a 16% decline reported the week before. They mentioned possible reasons for the decline, such as inflated valuations and waning investor interest.

Ethereum, the leading blockchain for NFT sales, generated $38.4 million worth of transactions last week. However, a significant portion of this volume – nearly $37.7 million – came from wash trading, an activity where investors artificially inflate trading volume by buying and selling NFTs amongst themselves. This raises concerns about potential market manipulation, as some suggested that some actors might be manipulating the market to create a false sense of activity.

Polygon (MATIC) emerged as a beacon of potential last week, with NFT sales surging 11.2% to push it past Bitcoin (BTC) for the second-place position. Interestingly, Polygon also saw a sharp increase in wash trading activity, which grew by 46% compared to the previous week. This surge in activity could signal a new era for Polygon in the NFT market.

Bitcoin sales, on the other hand, suffered a significant decline, dropping 40% to land in third place. This slump follows a similar trend for other blockchains like Fantom (FTM) and Blast (BLAST), which witnessed dips exceeding 70%.

The sales leaderboard for individual NFT collections saw a major shakeup. CryptoPunks, a collection of pixelated avatars on Ethereum, reclaimed the top spot with a staggering 155% increase in sales volume, reaching $5.26 million.

With major football tournaments like Euro 2024 and the Copa América in full swing, fan token sales experienced a significant boost last week. The Galatasaray (GAL) fan token led the surge, recording a phenomenal 70,149% increase in sales volume to reach $280.5 million following Turkey's victory against Georgia.

The success of other national teams like Spain, France, and Italy also fueled sales of their respective fan tokens, with increases ranging from 8,670% to 22,903%.

While the NFT market faces a temporary setback, the long-term outlook remains uncertain. The role of wash trading and its impact on market health requires further investigation. In light of these developments, investors and collectors are strongly advised to conduct meticulous research and exercise caution before making any NFT purchases.
